7. MARGE VS. THE MONORAIL

Phil Hartman is the glue that holds this all-timer together. As Lyle Lanley, he oozes charm and smarm, smooth-talking the hapless residents of Springfield into buying his faulty monorail system.

Season 4, episode 12

6. DEEP SPACE HOMER

One of the most memorable eps ever. It's the insect overlords; Homer finally getting the ending to Planet of the Apes mid-press conference; the inanimate carbon rod – it's all pretty much perfect.

Season 5, episode 15

5. A STAR IS BURNS

Mr. Burns at his tyrannical best. The evil billionaire is on never better form as he tries to rig a small-town film festival by throwing millions of dollars at an ego-fuelled production of his life.

Season 6, episode 18

4. ITCHY AND SCRATCHY LAND

Deserving of its place on this list for the wonderful "Bort?" exchange alone. The family's holiday from hell sees the titular theme park suffer a Westworld-style meltdown – it's a classic.

Season 6, episode 4

3. HOMER BADMAN

An episode that deals with serious issues –like sexual assault and alarmist media coverage – in a way only Golden Era Simpsons can. The candy convention intro might be the best B story ever.

Season 6, episode 9

2. LAST EXIT TO SPRINGFIELD

It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times in this masterful episode, which sees Homer become a union leader at the Power Plant in order to cover the cost of Lisa's braces. And that's the tooth!

Season 4, episode 17

1. BART'S COMET

Our favorite ever epsiode makes our hearts swell and our sides split as the entire town crams into Ned's bunker as a comet hurtles towards Springfield. And yes, we are disgusted with Rod and Todd.

Season 6, episode 14
