The best movies of 2020

From time-inverting blockbusters to Adam Sandler's most nerve-shredding role, these are the finest films of last year

It might have been difficult to visit the cinema last year, but 2020 was still graced by some amazing films. Here are our six favorites...

6. THE LIGHTHOUSE

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson hit career-best form as wild-eyed wickies who lose the plot when they're stranded on a wind-lashed island. Shot in the archaic 1.19:1 aspect ratio, this head-messing flick feels anything but old hat.

5. SOUL

Moving between a photorealistic New York and the softer, more abstract The Great Before, Soul offers up stunning animation and a heart-swelling message about grabbing life where you can.

4. MANK

Gary Oldman's alcoholic screenwriter pens Citizen Kane in this witty recounting of how Herman J Mankiewicz's seminal work came to be. Mank's incredibly witty script steals the show.

3. UNCUT GEMS

The Safdie brothers' nerve-shredding thriller sees Adam Sandler deliver the turn of his life as the hapless jeweller digging an increasingly deep hole for himself. Kiss your nails goodbye.

2. PARASITE

Bong Joon-ho's genre-mashing masterpiece took Best Picture at the Oscars, and it's not hard to see why. Part jittery thriller, part social commentary, part inky black comedy, Parasite defies being pigeon-holed.

1. TENET

A super-suspenseful blockbuster that surges forward with ruthless momentum, even as cars, bullets and a 747 slide past in the opposite direction. Tenet is bold and nuts, and 2020's best movie.
