The best movie endings of all time

From shocking twists to famous last words, we look back at some of our favorite endings in cinema history.

Here are our favorite movie endings of all time, in no particular order. Oh, and obviously massive cinematic spoilers ahead...

Casablanca (1942)

Casablanca isn't just one of the greatest pieces of propaganda in history, it's also one of the most quoatable films ever made. It doesn't get much more iconic than Rick's, "Here's looking at you, kid".

Thelma & Louise (1992)

Optimistic, tear-jerking, and easily one of the best movie endings of all time. It's an even better blaze-of-glory freeze frame than Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

An intentionally anticlimactic climax that adds to the mystique of Raiders, which remains one of the greatest action movies of all time. Who'd have thunk a crate could sign a movie off in such style?

Toy Story 3 (2010)

Before leaving for college, Andy hands his toys over to sprightly tot Bonnie, starting a whole new chapter in their lives. It’s a beautiful, tear-inducing way to end a trilogy. "So long, partner".

Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

Ending with a montage of monochrome mushroom clouds – backed by Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again”, it's one of the best movie endings because it’s tragic, powerful, and yet funny.

Back to the Future: Part 2 (1989)

The most bonkers entry on this list sees Marty McFly sent home in the original movie, only to appear seconds later from the future in the sequel's finale. "Great Scott!", indeed.

The Usual Suspects (1995)

The final scenes of this thriller are the foundation on which the whole house of cards is built. If the filmmakers hadn’t nailed that finale, Suspects wouldn't be such a classic ’90s movie.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)

Even 50 years later, Bond has never seemed so human as when his new bride is killed in a clinical drive-by shooting. Who said 007 doesn't do emotion?

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

After two hours of prison moive hell,  audiences are treated to the ultimate cathartic reunion between Andy and Red in a perfect, wordless finale. An utterly uplifting sign-off.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

With Thanos’ famous finger snap dusting half the beings in the universe, there’s no question the Mad Titan has won the battle. One of the boldest and best blockbuster endings ever made.
