How to transfer PS4 games to PS5

Take your PS4 games to PS5 with these methods

Want to play your PS4 games on that shiny new PS5? With our easy tips, you'll be playing your last-gen faves on the new system in no time...

VIA EXTERNAL DRIVE

The easiest option is to transfer your PS4 games to PS5 via the external HDD or SSD you're already using for your PS4. All you need to do is unplug the drive from your PS4 and plug it into your PS5 and you're good to go. There's no reformatting required.

VIA WI-FI TRANSFER

For games installed to your PS4's HDD, you need to use a Wi-Fi transfer. Go to 'Settings>System>SystemSoftware>Data Transfer' on your PS5. Follow the instructions and you're all set.

VIA DOWNLOAD

Don't want to mess with drives? Just redownload your fave PS4 games onto your new PS5. All of your games from your media library will carry over, and as a bonus, the PS5 is much faster at downloading games than the PS4.

VIA DISC

If you have a PS4 game on disc, you can put it into your PS5 (the standard console, not the Digital Edition), and start playing. That said, you'll have to redownload any mandatory updates.

POTENTIAL ISSUES

There are reports that transferring PS4 games and data to the PS5 using an ethernet cable can lead to a "rebuild database" bug. While this isn't a widespread issue, you're currently safer doing transfers over Wi-Fi.
